Their work centers on the questions, How do you remember and what do you choose to forget? Through the act of remembering, Muse uses their body to map the lived experience of Africans in America. Muse channels trauma to connect with, process and alchemize pain; both personal and collective through movement, ritual and collective dreaming. Muse holds a BA in Film Production from Howard University and studied at the Film Academy in Prague. Muse was a 2022 Artist in Residence at Stove Works and the summer 2022 Workspace Resident at Squeaky Wheel. Muse was a 2020 Corrina Mehiel fellow and a 2019-2020 Leslie Lohman Museum Artist Fellow and was the 2019 DCAC Curatorial Fellow. A former Artist-in-Residence at the Flux Factory, they were also a 2018 Artist-in-Residence at the ARoS Museum in Denmark. Muse video work has been commissioned for performances at The Shed, Mabou Mines Theater, and Dixon Place. Through their work, Muse hopes to create space for Black people to be free, if only for a frame. At times she faces the camera, while at other moments we glimpse the growing pile of discarded hair filling a small basket. “Through a veil, I became a filter for others’ opinions, hurts and lies,” she proclaims. While physical violence or control is not necessarily alluded to, it is clear from the tone of her voice that her history includes the subjugation of her personal self-determination in the quest to meet the needs of others. The stripping of the extensions can be understood on multiple levels–shedding artifice or imposed standards of beauty among them–but they all lead to the acknowledgement that personal autonomy is a critical component of self-love. The title which roughly translates to “the black woman who belongs to no one”, is inspired by Enrique Grau’s painting La Mulata de Cartagenera. The artist subverts the male gaze by offering an image that is both sensual but challenging to the viewer. The feminine is not only to be desired but to be honored. The smaller photos flanking the portrait are all offerings to Oshun, the Goddess of Sensuality, Fertility and Fresh Water. The need to be remembered and honored in our lives and death(s). Featuring work from over 12 Queer and/or Trans, Black and Indigenous, People of Color (QTBIPOC), where will I be buried*? holds space for artists and audiences from marginalized communities to center ourselves in our mourning, healing and transformations. For QTBIPOC communities the question of where “will I be buried” is not easily answered. How we approach ritual, ceremony and death varies culture to culture, religion to religion and even more so depending on your gender or sexual identity. Too often Black Trans* people are misgendered in their death, a continued violence that started long before the moment of their death. Using death as an entry point the included artists bring dynamic responses to the titular question exploring pleasure, pain, longing and transcendence. Some artists offer comforting prayers, altars, and song; others document our imagined and contested past and possible futures. This online exhibition features the incredible multimedia work of artists Felicita Felli Maynard, Jessica Lauren Elizabeth Taylor, Nine Yamamoto-Masson, Smita Sen, Brittany J. Camacho, Rox Campbell, Catalina Xavlena, Dillon Forrester, Monilola Olayemi Ilupeju, Wazina Zondon and Linda Labeija. With workshops and performances led by Vee Perez, Saeng-Fah Graham, olivia ahn, and Karolina Castro. Curating during COVID and a social uprising has been a challenge. As curators from the communities most impacted by these events we have had to be flexible, creative and patient.
